Aberdeen's Golden Jubilee

St. Mary’s Home is 60!

The 10th of February 2019, St. Mary’s Home in Aberdeen turned 60! We had a simple family celebration that began with a Mass of Thanksgiving at 2.30 in the afternoon, celebrated by Auxiliary Bishop Joseph Ha. He said more than just establishing an “old folks Home”, the Sisters were heeding God’s call to serve Him in the Elderly Poor and to share the Gospel values with them. He “commissioned” the volunteers to do likewise, to take their act of loving service and care at the Home, and to share it in their own homes and at the workplace.

The Mass was followed by a tea reception and concert in the Auditorium. Being the 6th day of the Chinese New Year, a band of infirm Residents and volunteers played a joyful percussion beat to encourage the Chinese lion escorting Bishop Ha. When everyone found a seat, Bishop and Mother Philomena cut the cake, then the curtains on stage lifted … We travelled back to when several French Little Sisters arrived in Hong Kong for the first foundation in Kowloon in 1923 … and then 4 Little Sisters and 2 elderly gentlemen from Kowloon took the “Star Ferry” to Wong Chuk Hang in1959 to establish the second foundation.

Our Associates, Thomas and Alice, captivated the audience with a Powerpoint narrative about St. Mary’s founding and its beginnings. Two groups from the Legion of Mary continued on the happy, joyous mood with spontaneously crafted songs and dance! The English-speaking Associates concluded the concert with a moving Jubilee Song. Praise the Lord for this wonderful day!
